The “International House” is a centre to welcome and train researchers and promote cultural exchange. This new project, promoted by AREA Science Park, was officially launched in June 2008 following a Memorandum of Intent between the Municipality of Trieste, the Province of Trieste, and universities and leading scientific institutions in the Trieste area.

It aims to create a service network for strengthening the international appeal of research centres.
The objective is to attract qualified human resources to Trieste, ensuring on the one hand the improvement in the quality of stay for foreign researchers who are guests at local scientific institutions and, on the other, the enhancement of the scientific and technological potential of the area.

Areas of activity

1.  a programme for incoming visiting researchers:
this programme is aimed at individual researchers who are leading international specialists and can be hosted by scientific institutions within the Regional Coordination network.
The programme will also nurture networks of excellence on a regional and international level.

2.  a mobility programme for outgoing researchers
for students/researchers from scientific institutions in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region who wish to pursue their training at foreign universities. In this perspective,
training initiatives and fellowships will be organised to be performed at academic institutions abroad.

3.  support for research projects with regional value
and impact on market activities: this measure provides for the co financing of
research and technological development projects, performed jointly with a number of scientific institutions in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, for the purpose of promoting the transfer of knowledge towards the manufacturing system.

4.  management of welcoming services for foreign researchers:
the measure involves the institution of a single welcoming office, extending the Mobility Centre for managing administrative and legal procedures, pertaining to the entry and stay of foreign students and researchers.

Additional services

Thanks to the Memorandum of Intent signed by the Municipality, Province and Chamber of Commerce in Trieste, and by other scientific institutions based in Trieste, the Office will also have a branch in the centre of the city. The project will be enhanced by a number of additional services pertaining to:

- residential service;

- access to an international school and nursery service;

- Italian language courses;

- service card for accommodation, transport, purchases and leisure activities.

The sum of activities revolving around International House will be organised on the basis of the needs of each regional scientific institution and in close collaboration with the latter.
