In October 2004 MIUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research) and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region signed a framework agreement for the establishment of the Molecular Biomedicine Technological District. The area of the district is located in FVG, where consolidated companies and institutes, including the Consortium for Molecular Biomedicine (CBM), have been operating for many years in this sector.
CBM has the task of supervising the organisation of the District, elaborating the strategic guidelines for the activities set up and promoting the initiatives planned.
AREA Science park on the other hand is responsible on behalf of the FVG Region for the operational control of the activities carried out by the Consortium for Molecular Biomedicine.
CBM is a public/private consortium and AREA is its majority shareholder. Other shareholders include public research bodies and companies and institutions in the industrial and financial world.
Alongside basic research its activity focuses on clinical applications, enhancement of industrial research and pre-competitive development in the biotechnology market.
The overall strategy of the District is based on the attraction and creation of new innovative firms and the economic exploitation of intellectual property.
The Molecular Biomedicine District will make up one of the clusters of the broader and more inclusive Knowledge District, set up on the initiative of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region with the aim of enhancing research, technology transfer, spin-offs, territorial marketing and the creation of ventures.
