"HOW TO REGISTER A PATENT" Various forms of protection of intellectual property exist, depending on the type of invention they are designed to protect (for further information, click here). Applications for patents, models or brands can be deposited at the Patent Offices of the Chambers of Commerce. Such offices can provide the necessary forms and information on the costs involved. The drafting of the patent and the registration procedure can either be carried out by the individual or, preferably, with the help of an expert (for further information, a register of patent consultants can be found at: http://www.ordine-brevetti.it).
All applications are forwarded to Ufficio Italiano Brevetti e Marchi, the patents-and-brands office responsible for granting patents and registering models and brands. It should be emphasised, however, that in order to claim ownership of an invention and the protection rights relating to it, fulfilment of the originality requirement is essential: a verification of the absence of precedents (prior cases) carried out by experts such as those at Ufficio Studi e PatLib is advisable in order to avoid incurring unnecessary expenses attempting to claim priority rights already held by others.
