"SCIENCE CAFE' " The Science Café encounters are informal meetings for a non-specialist public, which put people at ease by creating a friendly atmosphere perfect for discussing music, literature, cinema and – why not? – science, too. There is no lecture’s desk, and no teaching material is used by the scientists. This is not a lesson but rather an occasion for information exchange, conversation and debate on the implications - including social implications - of scientific findings and their applications. The aim is to attract people from all walks of life to science topics by combining such topics with various art forms, such as playing of pieces of music or live readings of literary texts, without forgetting the very special atmosphere of the venue. There really was only one place for the Science Café to take place: at the historic Caffè San Marco, in the Central European heart of Trieste. The writers Svevo, Voghera and Magris used to meet in this café, as have generations of academics and students. It is by tradition a place for conversation, cultural exchange and discussion and today, thanks to AREA Science Park, these are branching out into science. And with the Science Caffelatte initiative, meetings are also open to the youngest members of the public so that the worlds of childhood and science – as well as the inspiration and unpredictability that characterize both – can be drawn together.
