"INVESTING IN INNOVATION" AREA’s objective is raising the region’s profile. Its ultimate aim is to attract investments in hi-tech activities characterised by high-level innovation by stimulating a synergy with the principal local participants in the development of innovative small and medium-sized enterprises and of industrial and technological clusters. It seeks to connect up the strengths and skills of the region’s stakeholders within a wider national and international context of regional economic development based on technological innovation. The international context is represented by the regions and countries considered to be of strategic interest by regional and national governments, namely Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and, more generally, the EU accession states, which obviously have a strong growth potential. Another very recent development is the internationalization of the Science and Technology Park which has opened up in Far Eastern countries, in particular in China. AREA also works to arrange, promote and coordinate major Research and Development projects aimed at supporting innovation within SMIs and creating infrastructures. The enhancement of scientific and technological research is carried out by promoting and supporting a synergy and collaboration between the centres, institutes and companies based in AREA SciencePark which operate within the same - or closely connected - scientific and technological fields, as well as between these institutions and the technical, industrial and economic outside world. These activities are generally carried out through the Coordination Network of the national and international Research Centres in Friuli Venezia Giulia, coordinated by AREA Science Park.
