Research, innovation and territory How is knowledge translated into innovation, and how innovation is then translated into growth of businesses and the economy? What are the most suitable methods for evaluating the effects of innovation policies? Written by AREA Science Park, a top MIUR (Ministry for Education, University and Research) national research body and one of the main multisector science parks in Europe, the volume is based on the results of research carried out by the Department of Economic Sciences and Statistics at the University of Trieste and reflects on these themes.
The analysis focuses on related analytical spaces:
- the summary of the theoretical and empirical debate on innovation, clarifying the evidence of a link between innovation, growth and local area and tackling central themes such as innovative systems, spillovers, effects on the performance of businesses and on employment; - the reflection on methods to be used for evaluating public works, focusing on the fundamental steps involved: from the conditions for the public work to measuring the expected benefits for business and the local area; - the analysis of the data available on innovation in Europe and Italy, with a specific examination of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia case, completed by an evaluation of the preferred innovative strategies of a small group of local businesses. The volume makes comprehensive, far-reaching reflections, even enabling the non-specialist reader, policy makers and those responsible for innovation policies, to be aware of the main results achieved by researchers in the field in general terms.
