2003 Social Budget of the Trieste AREA Science Park Consortium
This document was written by the group structures, with the personal contribution of: Giuseppe Leo Di Rosa, Nicola Archidiacono, Paolo Cattapan, Gianni Cozzi, Marta Formia, Gabriele Gatti, Gianfranco Paulatto, Paola Pavesi and Alessandra Billi.
In addition to fulfilling the mission set out in the Memorandum of Association, the programmes and projects implemented by AREA for the enhancement of research, the transfer of knowledge and technology, the diffusion of innovation to the production industry, advanced training and the mobility of researchers, are also operations that can be used to assess the effectiveness of its work, in the light of its effects on the area in which it works. This type of evaluation cannot be fully expressed by the accounts, however necessary they may be. In fact, the traditional accounts for the year are unable to provide residents and the various stakeholders with sufficient information about AREA’s work, nor do they represent that idea of responsible business management and sustainable development being fostered by the European Union.
This knowledge led to the idea to write AREA’s first Social Budget, highlighting the experience and decisions made by the science park and disclosing its values and mission. Communication and transparency are concepts that a public administration is obliged to put into daily practice. This is because the use of public resources makes it necessary to demonstrate the social function of the actions taken.
The Social Budget provides a picture of the situation in 2003, emphasising certain elements of quantitative interest.
