The Karst is characterised by unusual floral combinations of interest to bees. Alongside the highly popular “Karst mixed-flower honeys”, this area also produces prized and extremely interesting “one flower” honeys, including the so-called “marasca honey” (sour cherry flower honey).
The potential for making the most of the environment, exploiting internal bee nomadism in order to boost the production of the more highly prized and profitable “one flower” honeys”, emerges from mapping the local bee flora. Greater apiculture also has the important effect of protecting the environment, through increased pollination by bees.
The study confirms the need for a strategy for protecting the designation of origin of Karst honeys, especially in view of the economic boost this would give these products. This indication derives from the detailed analysis of the study into production costs relative to both stationary and nomadic apiculture.
