Research and Technology in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region

SUBJECT

This report is designed to act as a work and discussion document for the regional conference on public research in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It has therefore been developed through the collection of data relative not just to the public research bodies working in the region, but also to local enterprises that work in the field of research and all those structures that offer technological services.

We would like to thank the managers of the above companies for their invaluable assistance. However, this data would be meaningless if it was not put into the context of the region’s wider macroeconomic and structural situation.

In fact, we believe that this is the only possible way to gain a full understanding of the decisions made by the Italian Government and local authorities in the past, relative to the development of a number of scientific institutions in one of the most advanced scenarios on a national and international level.

The conditions seem to be very good and those involved in this system are clearly identifiable, with clearly distinguished roles and responsibilities. On the one hand, we have the technological offer, represented by the research centres and universities, funded by national and local government bodies, on the other, we have the technological demand, comprised of businesses, mainly small, which have an internal R&D department and/or acquire technology externally. In between these two sides, we have the interface bodies, made up of innovative service centres that bring the demand and offer together.
