Artificial Vision: state of the art and application to the woodworking industry
Adriano Fusco, Pierantonio Salvador and Gianluigi Bortolussi, Eidon spa (Udine)

Created for scientific and military applications, artificial vision technology is now used increasingly to control production processes in numerous industrial sectors. This publication presents and discusses the main results of a study carried out by the AREA Science Park Consortium of Trieste, in collaboration with CATAS S.p.A. (R&D institute and laboratory for testing furniture and wood-based products), into the state of the art of this technology and its current and potential application to the woodworking industry.

After an overview of artificial vision, introducing the technology and the market structure, the study examines existing and potential applications linked to the various phases of woodworking, from cutting the trunk to the assembly of finished furniture, and covering all the intermediate processing phases.

It analyses the offer types, the mechanisms that regulate the introduction of a vision system into a company, the necessary investments and the potential risks and advantages. A list of organisations and websites of interest maps out skills and know-how present in Italy and abroad.

The study intends to stimulate the interest of businesses in these technologies and offer ideas for participation in joint projects that could lead to a reduction in development costs for new applications.
