Enhancing research and industrial innovation
An agreement between AREA and the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK).
Enhancing research and industrial innovation, particularly in the field of biomedical,
domotic and renewable energy technologies.
“This synergy between research centres will enhance technological and industrial development
in northeast Italy as well as strategic areas of east-central Europe”, explained Andrea Simoni,
director of the Materials and Microsystems Centre (CMM) of the FBK.

The agreement signed this morning by Diego Mosna, vice-president of the FBK, and Giancarlo
Michellone, the president of AREA Science Park (Trieste), also included a convention between the
CMM of FBK and the Molecular Biomedicine Centre (CBM) of Trieste. The two centres will share their
competences in microsystems and biomedical research to develop special microchips to analyze
proteins, among other things. They are meant to be advanced portable miniature low-cost
laboratories for the diagnosis of tumours or degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.
The collaboration springs from AREA’s strategy, aimed at building partnerships with national
and international institutions to create a network of high-level competences to support local
development.
The Fondazione Bruno Kessler (www.fbk.eu)
Located in Trentino, an autonomous province governed under a special autonomy
statute in northern Italy, the Fondazione Bruno Kessler – with over 350 researchers – performs
research activities mainly in the fields of information technology, materials and microsystems,
Italo-Germanic studies and religious sciences.
Thanks to a close network of alliances and collaborations, FBK also operates in the fields
of theoretical nuclear physics, networking, telecommunications and social sciences (studies of
public policy effectiveness).
The objectives of the FBK are:
- Performing research recognized at an international level
- Carrying out applied research of strategic importance to the province
- Developing, enhancing and disseminating research results
- Promoting innovation at local level
