Title

Attractive low-temperature and low voltage wall or ceiling heating (Ref: 08 AT 0102 0ITR )

Deadline

Wed, August 26, 2009

Abstract

An Austrian company has developed a large-scale wall/ceiling heating element, which can be powered between 3 and 48 V. The heating element is lightweight, easy to produce, only 15 – 25 mm thin and covered with an innovative foil that looks like sand or stone. Advantages are very short heat up phase and decorative integration into existing buildings through an unlimited number of design possibilities. They are looking for partners interested in production, distribution or licence agreements.

Description

Electric panel heating is quite common and different systems have been in use since the early eighties. This heating system offers an extremely fast heat up phase (reaching room temperature within 10 minutes) and unlimited number of design possibilities. The heating panel consists of a sand foil (0.5 – 1 mm) fixed on a heating element support out of aluminium (0.7 – 1.5 mm). On the backside is an electric isolation foil (0.1 mm) and the fourth part is the heating foil (conductive polymer foil). The backside is covered with a heat insulation. The whole panel has a thickness between 15 and 25 mm – depending on the insulation material used. Both-sided heating panels for partition (minim. 40 mm thickness) or the use of doors to heat a room could also be realised. Heat storage can be included with additional thermal ballast (e.g. concrete) in a tailor-made way. The mounting is done by screwing the panel on profiles or directly onto the wall. The use as floor heating element is not foreseen at the moment. The mounting on ceilings is also possible by using an additional safety mechanism. Demounting is also not a problem (screwing, plugging, insertion). The heating panel can easily be disassembled in its single parts. The surface design of the heating panel is done with an innovative sand foil, offering a comfortable appearance with one or more colours. Also patented “sandstone” surfaces or powder coating/screen printings are possible. The foil is transported in rolls and can be laminated locally. The heating panel is powered below 48 V (all electric components are available in the customary approval mark) and combinations with photovoltaic or small windpower plants are possible. The temperature will be between 22 and 35 degrees Celsius (40 degrees are also possiblebin the long term) and the regulation via a thermostat on the panel or somewhere in the room is possible. The technology is the first that provides a finished surface and can be installed as prefabricated modules. The large surface that is used for heating allows much lower actual room temperatures, conserving energy. As usual, installation costs are comparatively low for electric heating, but the disadvantages of conventional electric heating (bulky boxes, no control over heating cycles or high consumption) are solved. The finished surface eliminates the need for fettling and painting. The technology can be used as additional heating or as a full heating system for low-energy construction (passive houses) and in areas with low heating loads (Mediterranean Sea). It can be installed in the course of a restoration without changing or first-time installation of pipes. The product exists in working prototypes, but still needs to be optimizing for serial production.

Innovation and advantages of the offer

Technological advantages:
- Other systems currently on the market can be installed in the wall or ceiling, but they require finishing (fettling, painting) on site and can not be re-used or easily dismantled.
- The sand-coating of metal elements allows the use of metal as wall (or ceiling) material and makes a very short time for heating up and low temperature due to high surface possible.
- Can be pre-fabricated as fully finished wall-system or cassettes for ceilings.
- Temperature can be perfectly controlled with thermostats, time- and day-programs or remote controls through internet and SMS. Heating of single rooms easily and quickly possible (e.g. hotel rooms that get heated only when a guest checks in: within 10 minutes the room can be warmed to the perfect level, while empty rooms stay unheated or at lower stand-by temperatures).

Advantages for the customer:
- Reduce heating costs by reducing the measured room temperature without loss of comfort or with increased comfort level (no cold walls).
- Much lower investment cost (no chimney, no storage, no boiler, no pipes, no pumps, no radiators.
- It is maintenance free and has an expected lifetime of at least 30 years, double the time of conventional heating systems like gas, oil or pellets.
- Easy installation (linking the powerlines, thermostates and temperature controls) and simple to check for correct functioning, because no moving parts and no leakages are possible (No maintenance costs).
- The comfort level is similar to an under floor-heating system, but without the need to change the complete floor.
- Safe, because it runs on low-voltage power via safety transformers - Many surface designs already available, but an unlimited number of different colours and structures is possible. The design is protected and cannot be copied by competitors, due to patents and trade secrets.

Comments

- Type of partner sought:
Industrial company or a medium-sized SME

- Specific area of activity of the partner:
The partner should have access to the market of heating systems or to the construction industry (prefab modules for the interior), a utility / power producer / grid

- Task to be performed:
The partner shall introduce the product to the market or shall provide the resources to set up sales and distribution jointly.
Further technical and design-development should also be done together. Cooperation in optimizing the product for the customers is also a vital task (feedback from the market).
Co-development of a new product using the expertise of the developer and the production facilities of the recipient.
The target market is Europe and the neighbouring countries in stage one, North and Central America and Asia in stage 2.
A licensing agreement is possible under certain conditions.
The core competence of the Austrian company lies in the surface coating and creating the application for it.
