Title

Real-time Bank Robbery Detection Using Live Video (Ref: 08 PT 65BN 0J65 )

Validation Date

Wed, January 28, 2009

Abstract

A Portuguese SME specialised in image analysis and computer vision has developed a software application that can detect bank robberies in real-time video sequences. The software can be used in automatic surveillance systems for automatic robbery detection. The company is looking for a commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Description

Nowadays the use of distributed video surveillance systems poses the problem of the huge number of video feeds that are produced and need to be monitored for threat assessment. This problem is more visible in bank environments, where the vast number of video feeds can’t be monitored in real-time by human operators due to physical and economical constraints. The developed system uses artificial intelligence methods in order to detect the event of a bank robbery or raid. The system can analyse video streams produced by current-standard video surveillance infrastructure, so there is no need for any kind of surveillance system modification or upgrade. The developed framework can be seen as an improvement to current video surveillance systems used at the banks, since it enables the real-time detection of robberies in progress.

Innovations and advantages of the offer

The proposed system has the following characteristics:
- Real-time robbery detection
- Automatic people detection and tracking
- Robust to shadows and sudden illumination changes
- The alarms can be signalled by digital contacts (DIO - Digital Input/Output) activation or by network protocol (IP). An IP software console is supplied, which can receive the produced events together with the face of the suspects.
- The console is able to simultaneously monitor a great number of remote sites.
