About AREA Science Park

The Science & Technology Park
AREA is based across three distinct sites: Padriciano, Basovizza and Gorizia with 90,000m2 of office space and laboratories.
In 2008, the turnover was €150,000m an increase of €20,000 on the previous year.
The employees numbered 2,439 in 2008 and 2,209 in 2007.
In 2008, there were 83 tenants of which 21 were research centres.  Now they are 88.

Examples include:
- Elettra, the light laboratory of Sincrotrone which focuses on national and international research (material/structural, nanotechnological, biological) at all levels.
- The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) - an international centre of excellence for advanced training in molecular biology with a specific focus on collaborating with developing countries.
- The International Centre for Science and High Technology - United Nations Development Organisation (ICS-UNIDO), a centre for technology transfer (TT) towards developing countries aiming at sustainable industrial development including emphasis on environmental issues.

The National Research Body
AREA encompasses both the superstructure of the park itself and the environment in which it functions. At its inception, AREA was created to manage and expand the park but as experience developed over time, numerous distinctive technology transfer competences were born which today have led to AREA being able to offer services to help the surrounding environment through international collaboration and training.

We have a proven track record of success:
- technology transfer into companies
  > 2,699 companies supported
  > 1,630 innovation actions implemented
  >      93 new patents filed
  >  increase in companies sales of 7,72% attributed to our intervention
  >  increase in companies personnel of 5,47% attributed to our intervention
- commercialisation of academic research results:
  > 298 research groups interviewed
  > 427 valorisation interventions
  > 235 research results evaluated
  > 46 patents filed
  > 27 research agreements with companies
  > 14 spin-offs formed
- training:
  > 11,000 training hours
  > 1,500 participants

Since 1978, we have been focussing on novel approaches for technology transfer.
We are one of the few International Science and Technology Parks to focus on customized and “ face-to-face” services rather than the traditional real-estate approach.

AREA also has collaborations with:
1. Italian Ministry for Economic Development (Initiative: Industria 2015)
2. Ministry for Research and Education (2009-2012 National Research plan)
3. Ministry of Innovation (International Project 2012 - Strategy for Innovation)
4. Entrepreneurship Centre, MIT, Boston (Growth of FVG enterprises)
5. SRI Consulting Business Intelligence (Business Intelligence for technology/business scenario consulting)
6. Case Western Reserve University, Ohio (Technology Transfer methodologies)
7. AREA represents north-west Italy in the Enterprise Europe Network Through our established network we contribute positively to consensus and development policies at regional, national and international level.
